The Con

In anticipation of their summer show in Glasgow, I take a look at the musical masterpieces of indie pop phenomenon - Tegan and Sara.

Just why are us Scots so captivated by this Canadian duo of identical twin talent? Maybe it’s the constant churning out of acoustic gold which has graced our ears for over a decade now. Or maybe it’s the eclectic sister act ensemble that never fails to mesmerise us. Whatever the explanation, there is no denying the sheer brilliance of The Con, the latest addition to the Tegan and Sara record collection. It takes us back to the days of ‘Walking With A Ghost’, and ‘Living Room’- tunes that were just so typically Tegan and Sara there was no question. It seems after a good while of nothingness, they’re back bigger and bolder than ever before.

Watch the vid for the old classic T&S song, ‘Walking With A Ghost’ – it’s right there! Amazing…

…and while yer at it check out this pretty hillarious live version of ‘Nineteen’:

The duo began to turn heads way back in 1998 where they broke into the local music scene following a great success in a battle of the bands contest.  Since then, they have gone from strengh to strength – picking up two prestigious music awards along the way.  The fifth installment radiates a tone we are less acquainted with- one with mysterious, darker connotations.

The album kicks off with a seemingly quaint little number entitled, ‘I Was Married’, showcasing the talents and vocal harmonies of the pair. Quaint though it may appear, the track actually has deeper political intent. Tegan and Sara both upheld at a recent MTV interview that the song was a statement against the American government, in relation to the gay marriage argument.

‘I Was Married’ sets the benchmark for the rest of the album to follow suit with history-fuelled angst and personal growth. ‘Nineteen‘ brings the tone of the album back to reflection from utter dwelling in sorrow, which the previous track provided. ‘Like O, Like H’ is probably the darkest track on the record, eluding to experiences of change and inner confusion, personified beautifully through the use of percussion. Overall, the album is a fascinating piece of work which deals with very serious political issues, lacing them metaphorically (and indeed, in protest) with perfect harmonies and soft music.

Despite having lost all three of the awards they were nominated for this year (for musical contribution to box office smash, Juno), The Con symbolises a definite commitment to the queer music scene. The latest offering isn’t one to be missed.
